Jeffco Schools’ two Outdoor Lab sites will host their annual open house on Saturday, September 15 as an opportunity for students and their families to visit each site before spending a week there as part of the sixth-grade curriculum.
The open house will be held from 10 am to 2 pm at both the Windy Peak and Mount Evans sites.
The annual open house gives students an opportunity to get acquainted with each site. While there, students and their families can meet staff and view the cabins, dining, and educational facilities.
“Kids want to know what they will be eating and where they will be sleeping. It helps kids that age feel comfortable with arriving,” explained Shannon Hancock, executive director of the Outdoor Lab Foundation.
A BBQ lunch is also available for $5, and all proceeds will benefit the two sites.
Outdoor Lab open to all Jeffco sixth graders
Outdoor Lab is a week-long sleep-away school for all Jeffco sixth graders. During their stay, students sleep in bunk-style wood cabins, share family-style meals, and participate in multiple activities in an outdoor setting.
Every sixth grade student in Jeffco is able to attend, regardless of disability or other factors.
“The kids come to the sites to learn to be stewards of themselves, others and the environment,” Hancock said.
Both sites are in use throughout the school year. By September 15, sixth grade students from seven different Jeffco schools will have already completed their week at one of the sites.
The Mount Evans site is located at 201 Evans Ranch Road in Evergreen, CO 80437. The Windy Peak site is located at 20973 Wellington Lake Road in Bailey, CO 80421.
Outdoor Lab also relies heavily on parents and fundraisers such as grocery store card programs to pay student fees. The Outdoor Lab Foundation, a non-profit committed to supporting Jeffco’s Outdoor Lab schools, also works to provide financial support and resources to the school.
